Dorotheus lived in the 6th century and decided from childhood to dedicate himself to the Church. As a young man, he became a monk at the Palestinian monastery of Abba Serid, where he became a disciple of John Climacus himself.
His first obedience was to meet and accommodate pilgrims. Thus, he was like the "gate" to the monastery — for he was the first to learn all the needs, troubles, and hopes of the worshippers. Dorotheus was so busy with his work that he constantly feared oversleeping. Therefore, he asked one monk to wake him for services and another not to let him sleep during the day. He also managed to establish a hospital for pilgrims at the monastery. In addition, he was the cell attendant of Elder John, who guided and taught him a lot.
Dorotheus was also acquainted with another great contemporary, Abba Zosimas. The wisdom he gained from great teachers, combined with his deep personal piety, allowed him, after John's death, to found a new monastery that became famous through the ages. Dorotheus left a vast number of spiritual messages, teachings, and writings. All of them are filled with spiritual wisdom, characterized by an incredible style and at the same time simplicity. His works were copied and preserved in all monastery libraries from century to century.
