Work is underway to shoot down drones as efficiently and cheaply as possible, said Defense Minister Raivis Melniks on the program "Morning Panorama" on Latvian television.
Raivis Melniks emphasized that foreign drones should not enter the airspace of Latvia and must be shot down. Commenting on statements that regularly shooting down drones with expensive missiles would be impractical, the minister noted that at this moment, human life cannot be valued in monetary terms, and everything must be done to protect the residents.
At the same time, the minister acknowledged that work is underway to shoot down drones as efficiently and cheaply as possible. He thanked the industry producing anti-drone systems. The minister reported that testing of these systems is currently being conducted and efforts are being made to integrate and deploy them at the border, "so that it is possible to protect and shoot down not with expensive missiles, but primarily to use cheap and effective anti-drone systems from our industry."
As reported by Bb.lv, on June 8, NATO mission fighter jets patrolling the Baltic airspace from France shot down a drone that had entered the territory of Latvia in the Berzgale parish of the Rezekne region.
