After the strong winds on Wednesday, the weather in Latvia will remain unsettled on Thursday. Meteorologists warn of new strong gusts, brief downpours, thunderstorms, and possible hail.
On Thursday, Latvia will once again be hit by strong northwestern winds. According to meteorologists' forecasts, in many areas of the country, gusts will reach 14–19 meters per second, and in Riga, up to 20 meters per second.
This is only slightly weaker than on Wednesday, when the wind was already breaking trees and causing local damage. The weather will be particularly unsettled in the afternoon.
Brief rain is expected in many places, with thunderstorms and hail possible in some areas. More cloudy weather is forecasted for eastern Latvia.
The air temperature will remain quite low for the end of May — a maximum of +12…+16 degrees.
In Riga, the day will be partly cloudy with possible brief precipitation. Due to the strong wind, a yellow-level warning will be in effect in the capital from midday until evening.
After the almost summer warmth of recent days in Europe, the weather in the Baltic states sharply contrasts with the situation further south — in Western Europe, abnormal heat continues.
Meteorologists explain Latvia's weather as a result of the collision of two major atmospheric systems. To the west of the country, a powerful anticyclone remains, while a cyclone is located to the east, which is intensifying the wind over the region.
On Wednesday, the strongest gusts were recorded in the center of Riga — up to 22 meters per second. In Dagda and Saldus, the wind reached 20 meters per second, while in Daugavgriva, Priekule, and Rezekne — 19 meters per second.
In such weather, residents are advised to be cautious near trees, advertising structures, and construction sites. Drivers should be particularly careful on open road sections and along the coast.
According to current forecasts, the wind will gradually subside by the weekend, and the air temperature will begin to rise again.
