Throughout May, more than ten national and international military exercises are taking place in Latvia. About 7000 soldiers are participating, including NATO allies and special operations forces units.
May in Latvia is marked by large-scale military activity. According to the National Armed Forces, more than ten previously planned exercises involving Latvian troops and NATO allies are being organized simultaneously in the country.
A total of about 7000 soldiers are participating in the exercises.
Among the largest maneuvers are "Kristāla bulta 2026", "Spring Warrior", "Spring Storm", "Open Spirit 2026", "Trojan Footprint 26", "Iron Spear 2026", "GRIFS VII", "Baltic Zenith", and "Aurora 26".
Some events are taking place not only in Latvia but also in cooperation with other countries in the region.
This year, particular attention is drawn to the NATO special operations forces exercise "Trojan Footprint 26". Part of these maneuvers is taking place specifically on Latvian territory.
The National Armed Forces emphasize that these are among the largest special operations exercises in Europe.
What is important to understand is that such exercises have become a regular part of military activity in the Baltic states in recent years. Against the backdrop of Russia's war against Ukraine, NATO is enhancing coordination, army interoperability, and the presence of allies in the region.
During the exercises, residents of Latvia may more frequently see the movement of military equipment, aircraft flights, and the presence of foreign military units.
The military emphasizes that all events were planned in advance and are conducted as part of preparations for joint defensive operations and the practice of ally interactions.
Some exercises focus on the actions of ground troops, while others concentrate on the work of sappers, mine operations, logistics, or the actions of special operations forces.
Amid rising tensions in the region, the Baltic states continue to increase the intensity of joint training with NATO, viewing it as part of a long-term strengthening of security.
