Many residents of Riga are unaware of property tax discounts: how to obtain them 0 12

If the family has:

• three or more children — 90% of the amount

• two children — 70%

• one child — 50%.

It should be noted that the city authorities may simply not be aware that the child continues their studies, and a discount is applicable for them.

"Since in not all cases the municipality has enough information to automatically apply the benefit, residents of Riga are encouraged to apply for it themselves if necessary."

The benefit is applicable if, as of January 1, 2026, the declared residence of the child was in the corresponding property with both parents or with one parent, and the young person continues full-time education in a general, vocational, higher, or specialized educational institution.

At the same time, parents whose children aged 19 to 24 are serving in the National Defense Service as of January 1, 2026, can also apply for the benefit. In this case, the necessary information about the service will be obtained by the municipality from the responsible institutions.

Applications for the property tax discount for 2026 can be submitted until December 15, 2026:

• by phone, calling 1201 on weekdays from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, if the child studies in Latvia and the information is available in state information systems. The consultant will check the data and, if they meet the conditions, will register the application;

• in writing, if the child studies abroad or the information cannot be verified. In this case, a certificate from the educational institution confirming the studies must be attached to the application.
