It’s wiser not to leave home - forecasters gave a grim forecast for the weekend

On Sunday, cold air will arrive in Latvia, which will persist into the following week, with destructive winds and precipitation expected on Sunday, forecasters warn.

On Saturday, the day of the Great Cleanup, it will be mostly cloudy, and rain is expected in many places throughout the day. There will be little precipitation in the morning, with more rain expected in the afternoon and evening. A southern to southwestern wind will blow, which will change to a northwestern wind by evening; gusts will reach 12–17 meters per second. The maximum air temperature will be +7 to +13 degrees.

On the night of Sunday, mainly on the coast, and during the day across the country, an intensification of the northwestern wind is expected with gusts up to 20–26 meters per second. Rain and snow are expected, with hail in some areas; however, starting from the west of the country, cloud cover will decrease and the sun will shine. A temporary snow cover will form in parts of Latvia, and the air temperature on Sunday will not exceed +2 to +8 degrees.

On Monday, the weather will become sunnier, but gusts of the northern and northwestern wind will remain up to 20 meters per second, with brief precipitation expected in some areas, and the air temperature will be below +10 degrees.

In the middle of next week, cold weather will also persist, with occasional brief rains, snow, and hail expected. At the beginning of May, a gradual increase in temperature is forecasted; however, at night, the thermometer may still drop below zero in some areas.

It is expected that trees will break during the Sunday storm, and there may be damage to roofs and other destruction. The strongest gusts of wind are forecasted in Kurzeme, Zemgale, and western Vidzeme. On Sunday, Latvia may experience the most extensive wind damage since the storm of July 29, 2024, so it is recommended to cancel all outdoor events and trips. Movement may be hindered not only due to falling trees and branches but also due to snow and blizzards.
