For the sake of confused Rigan residents, another street in Riga has been renamed

The process of changing toponyms initiated in Riga a couple of years ago cannot be stopped. Today, the Riga City Council has decreed that henceforth, Priekkalna Street will be called Andrei Priekkalna Street.

Why is this necessary? This decision was made because Priekkalna Street, located in Atgāze, is often confused with Priekkalnes Street, which is in the Bukulti area of the Vidzeme suburb, city officials claim.

The name of Priekkalna Street was assigned in 1923 in honor of the doctor and public figure Andrei Priekkalna.

According to the municipality, changing the name of the street will reduce the number of address confusion cases.

Let us remind you that starting in 2024, Riga has initiated a process of changing street names. Here are just a few of them:

  • Maskavas Street has been renamed and divided into Latgales Street and Lastadijas Street,

  • Pushkin Street has become Kārļa Mīlenbaha Street,

  • Gogol Street is now Emīlijas Benjamiņas Street,

  • Turgenev Street has been renamed to Vilhelma Purvīša Street,

  • Lermontov Street is now Viļa Plūdoņa Street,

  • Lomonosov Street has become Valērijas Seiles Street,

  • Typogrāfijas Street is now Augusta Spariņa Street.
