The sharp rise in fuel prices may threaten the operations of the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) - with current prices, the budget will not hold, and funds will only last until autumn.
The rapid rise in fuel prices may create serious challenges for the operational activities of the Emergency Medical Service by the end of the year, as with the price of diesel fuel at two euros per liter, the service's budget will face a deficit of 1.07 million euros, said Miks Ducis, head of external communications for the EMS.
In the service's budget for 2026, 2.24 million euros is allocated for fuel purchases. This means that the available funding will only be sufficient to provide pre-hospital services until September.
To find solutions, the Ministry of Health of Latvia has asked the EMS to provide forecasts and calculations for the necessary funding in case of rising fuel prices.
