Fountains Begin Operation in Riga

Thirteen fountains are under the management of the Riga municipality — ten stationary and three floating. Most of them started operating in April. The pools in the central parks of Riga — in Grizinkalns, Ziedondarzs, and on the Esplanade — have also begun to be filled with water.

The floating fountain in the city canal near Bastion Hill and the fountain in the pond of the Mazjumprava estate will start operating by the end of the week.

One of the prides of Riga, the oldest fountain "Seasons," is located in Vermanes Garden. Its sculpture was made in Berlin and installed in 1869. At that time, it was the most luxurious decorative sculptural composition of its kind in the city. The original, which was damaged by vandals, had to be dismantled in 1972. Later, sculptor Mirza Lukaza created a copy, which the municipality installed in 1978.

One of the most famous fountains in Riga, "Nymph," is located near the building of the Latvian National Opera. This fountain, created by sculptor Augusts Folcs in 1887, is an artistic monument of national significance. Its bronze copy was also made by Mirza Lukaza in 1986, while the original is kept in Rundale Palace.

The decorative pool in Grizinkalns near the sculpture "Lutausis" and the reconstructed pool in Ziedondarzs will become pleasant places for relaxation and coolness for both children and adults on hot summer days. Ziedondarzs also features the restored fountain "Froglets," built simultaneously with the creation of the park itself.

The technical condition of all Riga fountains and the quality of water in them are regularly monitored, and pollution measurements are conducted at least once a week.

During the season, the fountains located in enclosed, so-called fermentation pools, are regularly cleaned. The enterprise staff also promptly responds to residents' reports of possible pollution at one of the sites.

The municipality urges residents not to throw foreign objects into the water, such as sand, not to allow children to play in bodies of water where pollution is noticeable, and not to let dogs into the fountains.
