Outbreak of a Dangerous Disease in Ilguciems, Riga

Two more cases of measles have been identified.

Since April 10, two more cases of measles have been identified, bringing the total number of cases to 47, according to data from the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDPC).

The disease has been identified in one child and one adult.

The highest number of cases is among children and adolescents aged 6 to 15 years.

Of all 47 registered cases of measles: one case is in a child under 5 years old, 13 cases are aged 6-10 years, 15 cases are aged 11-15 years, one is aged 16-20 years.

Another case is registered in the age group of 26-30 years, two in the group of 31-35 years, two in the group of 36-40 years, three in the group of 41-45 years, and four in the group of 46-50 years.

Three cases have been identified in the 51-55 age group, one in the 56-60 age group, and one more infected person is over 60 years old.

As explained by CDPC representative Ilze Udre, the center is conducting an epidemiological investigation related to the measles outbreak and is organizing infection control measures.

The center notes that all registered cases are epidemiologically linked to each other, and the number of identified contacts is very large. They include contacts in educational institutions as well as outside them - in the patients' families, at public events, in international transport, and other places.

With the increase in the number of cases, it becomes more challenging to identify contacts, as their number is rising, the center noted.

To update issues related to the diagnosis, control, and prevention of measles, the CDPC has sent methodological materials to medical institutions.

As reported, the majority of those infected are students of the Riga Waldorf School located in Ilguciems.
