In the future, the fees for the services of sworn notaries will be significantly higher than before, writes Latvijas Avīze.
This decision was made yesterday by the government, which approved amendments to the rules on notary fees and their establishment prepared by the Ministry of Justice.
For the preparation and submission of a complaint regarding the rejection of an application for registration in the land book, it will now cost 100 euros per hour instead of the previous 30 euros. The price for the legalization of public documents will also increase. For example, the cost of legalizing a birth certificate or a university diploma for recognition of these documents in other countries was previously 18 euros, but now this amount will be 50 euros. The minimum fee for preparing a notarial deed, as well as for preparing a marriage certificate and an inheritance agreement, will now be 140 euros instead of the previous 80 euros. For the preparation of draft agreements for a deposit, loan, lease, and other transactions without notarial certification, the current fee of 100 euros will increase to 139 euros.
The Ministry of Justice justifies the need for a sharp increase in notary service fees by the rapid rise in consumer prices, which has rendered the existing price lists inconsistent with the amounts of transactions, the time required for document preparation, and the responsibilities of notaries. As the costs of maintaining notary offices have significantly increased in recent years, including utilities, employee salaries, storage of archival documents, and much more, the current increase is insufficient. The Ministry of Justice believes that raising notary service fees is necessary to attract young lawyers to these positions.
