Riga Should Strip Electric Cars of Free Parking and Other Privileges – Opinion

“The parking problem in the center of Riga needs to be addressed quickly, boldly, and decisively,” urges the Riga City Council from Neatkarīgā commentator Bens Latkovskis.

“The situation has changed significantly in recent years, as the number of electric vehicles on the streets of Riga has increased considerably, making it quite difficult to find parking on the roadside. Everywhere there are cars with blue license plates in front, which, of course, causes a negative reaction among owners of traditional vehicles. What should be done?

Let’s look at this problem from several aspects. Both from a practical and a politically philosophical perspective. Why were these privileges introduced? How logical and justified are they now? What needs to be done to resolve the issue? What is the mechanism for implementing these solutions? How optimal is this mechanism, and does it align with the fundamental principles of good political governance?

The privileges for electric vehicles were logical and understandable when electric cars were becoming more expensive, their charging infrastructure was poorly developed, and special support mechanisms were needed to shift the transition from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles. Now these privileges have fulfilled their initial function. Purchasing an electric vehicle is no longer an exceptional case. It is a normal, everyday practice. It is a choice that no longer needs to be particularly incentivized. Special privileges for individual electric transport have become unnecessary. Thus, they should fade away as an archaic relic.”

“Decisions leaking into the public space indicate that the Riga City Council plans to gradually eliminate the privileges for electric cars in several stages. As if we are talking about some socially particularly protected incapacitated individuals. In the same way (gradually), it is planned to increase parking fees, which have remained unchanged for many years.”

“Political parties that position themselves as future-oriented should put an end to the flirtation with those political forces that want to keep us in the past order of things. By remaining in yesterday, Riga will not see prosperity.”
