JSC "Latvijas valsts meži" (LVM / Latvian State Forests) plans to restore forests over an area of 14,000 hectares this season by planting 32 million seedlings of forest trees grown in the company's nurseries, the LETA agency was informed by the company.
The company noted that with the planting of the first spruce seedlings in the Tukums region, LVM begins the forest restoration season, which will last until mid-June.
LVM explains that on an area of 12,000 hectares, the forest will be restored through planting and sowing using manual tools, while on 2,000 hectares it will be done mechanically.
The company also reported that currently, the weather conditions are suitable for forest restoration through manual planting. The soil has thawed, and the moisture absorbed during the melting of the snow positively affects the survival rate of the planted trees.
LVM emphasizes that in such conditions, it is best to plant trees with an open root system — seedlings with bare roots, and later, when spring gives way to warmer and drier conditions, container seedlings should be planted.
At the same time, mechanized planting is planned to restore forests on an area of 1,700 hectares this year. These works will be entrusted to 13 units of machinery — excavators equipped with special planting heads.
Immediately after Easter, LVM plans to also begin mechanized sowing. The work is expected to be completed in 45 days, sowing about 100 kilograms of pine seeds. The sowing will be conducted in the regions of Eastern Vidzeme, Northern Latgale, Southern Latgale, Central Daugava, and Western Vidzeme over a total area of 300 hectares.
According to preliminary data, in 2025, LVM's turnover amounted to 604.564 million euros, which is 3.1% more than the previous year, while the company's profit increased by 36.1% to 204.319 million euros.
The company was registered in 1999, with a share capital of 525.989 million euros. LVM manages state forest lands. The sole owner of the company is the state, and the shareholder is the Ministry of Agriculture.
