Many pensioners who annually submitted declarations and included receipts to receive a refund for "justified expenses" will not receive anything this time. However, this applies to non-working pensioners. If a senior is working and is a taxpayer, they may have this overpayment.
Nuances of Overpayment in a New Way
The State Revenue Service (SRS) reminds: only the tax that has actually been paid can be refunded. However, since last year, pensions up to 1000 euros are not subject to income tax, which means that for most pensioners, tax on pensions is no longer withheld. In other words, there is nothing to refund.
Pensioners who:
- receive a pension over 1000 euros per month;
- work or receive other income subject to income tax,
must submit a declaration for 2025 with attached receipts for justified expenses.
How to "Justify" Receipts
As before, expenses for medical treatment and education can be included in the declaration, as well as documents for justified expenses of a spouse, parents or children, grandparents, etc.
For example, if children paid income tax, they can attach documents for justified expenses of their parents to their declaration.
The limit for justified expenses for one person remains the same — the total amount should not exceed 50% of annual income, but not more than 600 euros per year. When submitting the declaration for 2025, anyone from whom tax was withheld can refund 25.5% of that amount.
To find out if a refund is due, it is easiest to use the SRS Electronic Declaration System (EDS) — there the system automatically calculates the possible overpayment.
Where to Get Consultation
Pensioners who do not use the internet can get assistance in preparing and submitting the declaration:
- at customer service centers of the state and municipalities
- at SRS customer service centers
- by calling the SRS consultation phone: 67120000.
IMPORTANT: When calling, you can receive a personal consultation if you connect to EDS and provide the code displayed there. Questions about the declaration and justified expenses can also be asked in the EDS section "Correspondence with SRS," as well as to the virtual assistant available 24/7.
