Forecasters Surprised with the Forecast for the Last Week of February

At the beginning of the last week of February, a thaw is expected across the entire territory of Latvia, predicts the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center.

At the beginning of the week, cold nights will still persist, but in the second half of the week, a warmer air mass will gradually move into Latvia, significantly raising air temperatures.

In the coming nights, temperatures in the eastern part of the country will not be colder than -10 to -14 degrees, and by the end of the week and the beginning of the next week, a thaw is expected across the entire country.

According to forecasters, the weather will become more dynamic in the coming days: precipitation is expected in many areas of Latvia, initially as snow, transitioning to wet snow and rain as the air warms. On certain days, gusty winds will blow along the coast.

On Friday, it will be cloudy with occasional clearings. Light snow is expected in some areas at night, while the day will pass without significant precipitation. Nighttime temperatures will range from -9 to -14 degrees, warmer along the coast, and during the day, temperatures will rise to -2 to -7 degrees, and up to +1 to -2 degrees in the west.

On Saturday, the sky will clear in places, but from midday, clouds will bring snow and wet snow to the western and central regions. From the second half of the night, a light to moderate southwest to south wind will blow, strengthening along the coast to 15-18 meters per second. Nighttime temperatures will range from -6 to -11 degrees, and in Kurzeme and along the coast, from -2 to -6 degrees, while during the day, temperatures will be -1 to -4 degrees.

On Sunday, clouds will completely cover the sky, and a vast area of precipitation will pass through Latvia - predominantly snow at night, transitioning to wet snow and rain during the day. A light to moderate southwest to south wind will blow. With the gradual arrival of a warmer air mass, nighttime temperatures will be -1 to -6 degrees, while daytime temperatures will be +1 to +3 degrees.

At the beginning of the last week of February, it will also be quite warm, with temperatures in some places hovering around zero, but on certain days, especially during the dark hours, sub-zero temperatures will persist. Occasional precipitation in the form of wet snow or rain is expected.
