The Kurzeme region is currently experiencing an increased burden on hospitals. The Emergency Medical Service (EMS) is allowed to transport patients to other hospitals, the Ministry of Health reported.

This decision was made on Friday by the State Emergency Medical Commission, assessing the situation in hospitals across the country.

The beds in the Kuldiga Hospital are almost completely filled in the therapeutic profile, while in the Liepaja Regional Hospital there is no place to accommodate patients with neurological profiles.

To stabilize the situation, if necessary, the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) can transport patients to other hospitals of the appropriate profile, as well as organize the transfer of acute patients to those medical facilities where assistance can be provided.

At the same time, several hospitals in Kurzeme and Zemgale, as well as major university hospitals in Riga, have been instructed to prepare for an increase in patient flow.

The increased burden on hospitals is mainly determined by seasonal factors – the impact of cold on the cardiovascular system, exacerbations of chronic diseases, complications from respiratory infections, as well as an increase in the number of injuries due to winter conditions.

The commission emphasizes that at the moment the situation is not considered an emergency in the healthcare sector.

At the same time, the EMS has been instructed not to rush to all calls indiscriminately, but to more strictly assess responses to so-called low-priority calls.

Sick citizens of Latvia should consider that they may be taken far from home – to an available hospital.
