In Severe Frosts, Riga Will Provide Additional Support to the Homeless

Considering that particularly severe frosts are expected in the coming days, the capital's municipality will provide the homeless and people in crisis situations with temporary places in shelters, as well as food, personal hygiene opportunities, and social worker services, the Riga City Council's external communication department informed the LETA agency.

In winter, shelters operate from 5:00 PM to 9:00 AM, but are open 24 hours a day if at 8:00 AM the air temperature is below -10 degrees or below zero with wind speeds exceeding 10 meters per second.

In such weather, the homeless are provided with food, temporary places to stay if the temperature drops below -15 degrees at night and there are not enough shelters in a specific area, as well as warm clothing.

Additionally, during severe frosts, a mobile kitchen operates alongside existing soup kitchens, information about available assistance is intensified, and the day center for the homeless is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

A mobile team working with the homeless is also active on the streets of the capital.
