The number of low-income individuals in Latvia decreased by 5.4%. Did they get richer or go extinct?

At the end of last year, Latvia had 37,799 individuals with an active low-income status, which is 5.4% less than at the end of 2024, according to data from the Ministry of Welfare.

At the end of 2025, there were 18,558 individuals in the country who were assigned the status of low-income. This is 10.4% less than at the end of 2024.

The income threshold for assigning the status of a low-income household is 50% of the median income. In 2025, the income threshold for a low-income household for the first or only person in the household was 377 euros, and for other individuals in the household, it was 264 euros.

In turn, each municipality has the right to set the income threshold for assigning the status of a low-income household at no more than 80% of the median income, but not lower than the income threshold for a low-income household.

The maximum income threshold for a low-income household for the first or only person in the household in 2025 could be 604 euros, and for other individuals in the household, it could be 423 euros.
