The end of the week will still be very cold, but next week temperatures in some areas may approach zero degrees, predicts the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
This week, the weather conditions in Latvia were determined by a broad area of high pressure from the northwest, so the days passed without significant precipitation. At the end of the week, similar weather will persist, but at the beginning of next week, the influence of a stronger cyclone is expected, which may bring precipitation.
During the weekend, strong frost will continue, with temperatures in the eastern regions of the country dropping to -24…-25°C on the night of Sunday. At the beginning of next week, the air will warm up slightly.
On Friday, mostly cloudy weather is expected, with no precipitation. A weak to moderate eastern wind will blow. At night, the air temperature will drop to -4…-9 °C, and in the northeast, it will reach -11 °C. During the day, the air will warm slightly to -4…-9 °C, but by the afternoon, it will cool down again.
No precipitation is expected during the weekend, with variable cloudiness and occasional clearings. The eastern wind will remain weak to moderate.
On Saturday, the air temperature is expected to be around -11…-16 °C at night and during the day, while it will be slightly warmer on the coast - around -6…-10 °C. On the night of Sunday, thermometers will show -20…-25 °C, with the Kurzeme coast being warmer: around -12…-17 °C. During the day, the air in the central and eastern regions will warm up to -12…-17 °C, while it will be a bit milder on the coast - around -9…-13 °C.
At the beginning of next week, precipitation is expected in Latvia - snow and wet snow, and especially on the Kurzeme coast, gusty winds are possible. At night, temperatures will still drop to around -11 °C, while daytime temperatures in some places will approach 0 °C, especially in the western and southern regions of the country.
According to short-term weather models, daytime temperatures in Riga and central Latvia next week will fluctuate around -5…-3 °C. Light snowfalls are also possible, especially in the second half of the week.
