A new service is planned to be introduced in Riga — to provide children with meaningful activities at school until the Ligo holiday, said Vilnis Kirsis, Deputy Chairman of the Riga City Council, at a press conference today, according to LETA.
The local government explains that the goal of the activities organized by the educational institutions under the Department of Education, Culture, and Sports is to provide students of these schools with the opportunity to spend their free time during the summer holidays in a beneficial and free manner.
This will become one of the tools available to school directors to facilitate the implementation of a unified school system.
Kirsis emphasized that this will be support for parents who often do not have the opportunity to supervise their children during school holidays.
This opportunity will be provided to students in the first four grades, who will be able to spend four to six hours at school participating in sports events, creative workshops, games, and recreational activities.
It is planned that initially this opportunity will be organized in 30 schools, each of which can accommodate up to 50 children. Thus, students will be able to spend 15 summer days at school.
In total, 450,000 euros are planned to be allocated for these purposes.
