Influenza continues to spread in Latvia with the highest intensity in the last five years, public media report.
There have been reports of four deaths from influenza this season - all these individuals were not vaccinated against the virus. "Covid-19" is spreading more moderately, with the peak incidence occurring at the end of summer. Given the nature of the spread of these viruses and the upcoming New Year holidays, doctors strongly recommend that people assess their health before attending mass events or celebrations, as well as wash their hands and ventilate rooms.
This year, influenza is spreading quite aggressively, and the epidemic started earlier than usual. The Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDPC) currently does not have data for the Christmas holidays, but data obtained before Christmas shows that the incidence of influenza has reached nearly 800 cases per 100,000 residents. In comparison, last year the highest rate was 702 cases per 100,000 people, and that was in March, which is the end of the flu season.
"If we do not get vaccinated and go out into nature, but instead visit shopping centers as places of entertainment, then, of course, this disease will spread," said infectious disease specialist Gunta Sture.
Influenza is affecting all age groups and all regions in Latvia.
