A strong wind tore off part of the roof covering of the Latvian Academy of Arts building and damaged two decorative tower elements, said LAA public relations specialist Laura Ozola to the LETA agency.
The extent of the damage and the cost of repairs are currently being assessed, and work is underway to eliminate the consequences and restore the building.
The damage is not serious enough to close the institution and suspend its operations. Currently, classes at the Latvian Academy of Arts (LAA) are not being held, but the examination session will resume in January.
Access to the academy building is only possible through the entrance from the courtyard, as the central entrance, which has sustained the most serious damage, is cordoned off, said Ozola.
As reported, last night, gusty winds swept across Latvia, with the strongest gusts recorded in coastal areas - in the port of Liepaja, wind speeds reached 28.4 m/s, in Ventspils - 27.6 m/s, and in Daugavgriva - 25.9 m/s.
In the first half of the day, a northern, northwestern wind will persist at speeds of 15-19 m/s, and up to 25 m/s along the coast, but by evening, its gusts will begin to subside.
