The last week of the year in Latvia will start with strong gusts of wind, but gradually the wind will calm down, it will get colder, and a stable snow cover will form, promises the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center.

At the end of last week, a vast cyclone approached the territory of Latvia, bringing strong winds and precipitation. The northwestern and northern winds intensified across the country, with the strongest gusts recorded in the port of Liepaja at 28.4 meters per second (m/s) and in Ventspils at 27.6 m/s. On the night of Sunday, a snow cover of one to five centimeters formed in some eastern areas.

In the new week, the synoptic situation will not change significantly – active cyclonic activity will continue to determine the weather. In the first half of the week, gusty winds will persist in the central and western regions of the country, while precipitation will become more frequent across almost all of Latvia.

During these days, colder air will start to flow into Latvia, temperatures will gradually decrease, and rain will change to snow. During the New Year period, the weather will be wintery cold – in many places, temperatures will drop to −8…−13 degrees Celsius on the night of January 1, with only the Kurzeme coast being warmer at around −3…−5 degrees.

On the last day of the year, the sky will be cloudy, but in some places, sunny rays will appear between the clouds. Snow will fall in many areas at night, and only in some places during the day. The wind will remain weak to moderately strong at night, with gusts of 15–19 m/s in some central and coastal areas, and up to 21 m/s along the seaside, while during the day it will weaken across the country.

On New Year's Eve, the intensity of precipitation will decrease, and light snow is expected only in some areas. However, in the first days of the new year, the sky will still be cloudy, with new precipitation zones passing through Latvia, bringing snow and wet snow to most areas, and rain along the coast.

During these days, the wind will also strengthen and become gusty in some places. Although on the first day of the year the temperature will be wintery cold, dropping to −10 degrees in some eastern areas, by the end of the week, temperatures will rise slightly.
