Why are people no longer being urged to get vaccinated against COVID?

A year ago, it was recommended to get two vaccinations at once – against COVID and against the flu. Why are people no longer being urged to get vaccinated against COVID this year?

In the TV24 program Uz līnijas, one viewer asked the guest of the show – the head of the infectious diseases and anti-epidemic measures department at the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Sigita Geida:

"Why are people no longer being urged to get vaccinated against COVID? A year ago, it was recommended to get two vaccinations at once – against COVID and against the flu, but now it turns out that there is a shortage of flu vaccines, and there is nowhere to put the COVID vaccines!"

Currently, vaccination against COVID-19 is recommended for patients in at-risk groups – those who may experience severe forms of the disease and those with multiple chronic illnesses. However, if any residents of Latvia wish to get vaccinated against COVID-19, it is quite permissible, the expert noted.

Over the past week, the number of positive COVID-19 tests has slightly increased – from 4.8% to 6.3%. In response to the question of whether the level of illness this season could approach the epidemic threshold of 10%, Geida said:

"I don't think so. The spread of COVID-19 was highest in August and September last year and this year, while in January and February, it was very minimal."
