This year, Riga residents and city guests are once again heading to Dome Square for festive cheer and gifts, where the Christmas market is being held for the twenty-fifth time, writes Latvijas Avīze.
The market has gathered a quite impressive circle of traders - more than 80 entrepreneurs, artisans, and home producers are participating. The market manager, Anna Blaua, explains that the call for applications from traders was announced in the fall and the response was significant.
"The selection process is necessary - it guarantees quality and compliance with the atmosphere and authenticity of the market. The criteria are diverse - we assess the originality of the offer, the quality and origin of the products, the range, and more, so, as every year, several dozen candidates were left out," Blaua said, noting that fewer artisans are applying to participate in the market, but there is a great interest from the catering businesses.
A standard trading spot in Dome Square costs starting from 1500 euros for the entire duration of the market. This year it lasts 38 days - from November 28 to January 4. The organizers of the market have ensured that a deposit system is in place.
"This year we have taken a step forward, and visitors to the market can receive the money for the returned cup directly to their bank account," Blaua notes.
"The market has been changing and evolving for 25 years now. We care about creating a festive atmosphere so that every visit to the market for Riga residents and city guests remains in memory as a special event that brings the joy of Christmas. We have welcomed tourists from almost 30 countries in Europe, America, and Asia. We are especially pleased with those visitors who come to Riga specifically for the Christmas market in the Old Town," Blaua says.
Data from last year shows that around 200,000 people visited the Christmas market in Dome Square, of which 61% were foreign tourists.
