In Lithuania and Estonia, educators have already reached a salary level that is promised in Latvia only by 2030, said Inga Vanaga, the chairwoman of the Latvian Trade Union of Education and Science Workers (LIZDA), in the program Preses klubs on TV24, as reported by nra.lv.
According to her, in Lithuania such a salary — an average of 2400 euros, which is 130% of the national average — was achieved last year. At the same time, Lithuania invests half as much in infrastructure as Latvia, including funds from EU structural funds. "These are their priorities," emphasized Vanaga.
In Latvia, as noted by the head of LIZDA, the sector has managed to secure 45 million euros, work continues on the salary increase schedule, and 22 million that were intended to be cut have been preserved. However, this required tremendous efforts from both the Minister of Education and Science and the sector organizations.
"It is important to continue investing in education because we are competing with our neighbors not only in science but also in education. This is an investment in the tomorrow and the day after tomorrow of Latvia, not just a spending of money for today," explained Vanaga.
