Meteorological winter began in Latvia on Sunday, according to data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LEGMC) and weather forecasts, reports LETA.
On November 23, the average daily air temperature across the country dropped slightly below zero, and forecasts indicate that it will remain negative in the coming days.
Meteorological winter begins when the average daily air temperature stays below zero for at least five consecutive days, with the first of these days considered the start of winter.
Last year, meteorological winter in Latvia began on December 4, while in 2022 and 2023, it started on November 17.
At the meteorological station in Alūksne, meteorological winter this year began on November 15. In other years, winter usually arrives first in the Alūksne and Vidzeme uplands, and later on the Kurzeme coast.
Every year, solar winter begins on November 6 — a quarter of the year during which the Northern Hemisphere receives the least amount of sunlight. Astronomical winter will start on December 21, on the day of the winter solstice, and will end with the spring equinox on March 20.
Meteorologists forecast that there will be some precipitation in Latvia in the coming days, with the most snow expected in Latgale and Selonia.
According to data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, this week the temperature will be two degrees below normal, while next week, at the beginning of December, it may exceed normal by three degrees. The following weeks and winter as a whole are also predicted to be warmer than usual.
