According to the current Traffic Rules, during the winter period—from December 1 to March 1—only those passenger vehicles (weighing up to 3.5 tons) that have been 'changed' to winter tires are allowed to drive on the roads of Latvia.
And not just winter tires, but those specifically designed for use in severe winter conditions and marked with the 'mountain and snowflake' symbol.
This marking confirms that the tire has undergone special testing and is deemed suitable for driving on snow and icy roads.
If a vehicle is equipped with tires that only have the M+S marking but lack the 'mountain and snowflake' symbol, such tires will be considered non-compliant with winter requirements in the upcoming winter season, and their use during the winter period will be prohibited. However, from March 2 to November 30, they will be allowed for use.
The SDDC also reminds that the minimum tread depth for winter tires must be 4 mm. It is not recommended to use winter tires older than five to six years, as over time the rubber loses its properties. It should also be noted that a vehicle cannot be equipped with both studded and non-studded tires at the same time.
Participation in road traffic with studded tires is permitted from October 1 to May 1.
