The two main Christmas trees of Riga are 35 years old and reach a height of up to 21 meters, the Riga City Council reported. The selected trees will decorate Dome Square and Town Hall Square.
Today, the leadership of the Riga City Council left the capital to personally select festive Christmas trees in the territory of the Tireļi Forest District of the "Rīgas meži" enterprise, near the village of Cielavas.
According to the council, the cut trees are beautiful – their crowns are lush and dark green, which means that the trees have grown in fertile and moist soil.
The trees will soon be delivered to the city and decorated, with the lighting ceremony scheduled for November 29.
This year, around 20 Christmas trees will adorn the capital. They will be placed both in locations of major festive events and in various districts of the city, as well as near educational and cultural institutions.
Every year, fewer trees are brought to Riga, as this spring, the Department of Housing and Environment of the Riga municipality, in collaboration with "Rīgas meži" and local communities, planted seven trees that will be decorated right where they grow.
The new festive trees have been planted in Īļģuciems, Torņakalns, Bišumuiža, Rumbula, Jugla, and Jaunciems, as well as in Nordekyu Park.
