Ukraine's Troops Proposed to Be Introduced in Latvia – to Defend Against Russia

European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius stated that the Ukrainian army, after a potential end to the war with the Russian Federation, could help deter the Russian threat at the eastern borders of the EU, Politico reports.

According to him, if the war in Ukraine ends with a peace agreement, Ukrainian military forces could help defend the eastern borders of the EU from Russia.

"It would be good if the battle-tested Ukrainian army, after peace is established in Ukraine, were present in all border countries, starting with the Baltic region along with the German brigade and rotational American battalions," Kubilius said.

Official Riga has not yet commented on the idea of the high-ranking Lithuanian official regarding the introduction of Ukrainian troops into the territory of the Republic of Latvia.

There is time to think. Politico journalists noted that this prospect remains distant, as Russian President Vladimir Putin shows no interest in compromise. At the same time, Politico writes that Ukrainian military personnel are the most experienced in Europe and could become invaluable allies, although the prospects for Ukraine's acceptance into the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) have faded due to resistance from the United States and other allies.

Kubilius also emphasized that the deployment of Ukrainian military forces would not undermine the sending of an armored brigade from Germany to Lithuania, the presence of American troops in the region, and the collective defense provision under Article 5 of the NATO Agreement.

In addition, Commissioner Kubilius predicted the timing of the Russian divisions' attack on the territory of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.
