Of the upcoming four weekends, Saturday is expected to be the sunniest day, while the most rain and snow will likely fall on November 18, according to current forecasts, reports LETA.
A period of cold weather has begun in Latvia, which may last for a long time. In the second half of November, a stable snow cover may establish in many regions of the country. In some areas, the onset of meteorological winter is expected — in the Alūksne and Vidzeme highlands, this could happen as early as November 15.
During the weekend, air temperatures in Latvia will mainly fluctuate between -5 and +5 degrees. On Saturday, the weather will be determined by a high-pressure area, and the sun will shine. In the following days, atmospheric pressure will begin to decrease, cloudiness will increase, and precipitation will occur. According to the current forecast from the Global Forecast System, the most precipitation is expected on the holiday — November 18, when a layer of snow from 1 to 10 centimeters may cover most of the country.
A light wind from various directions is expected. On Saturday morning, gusts of northern wind up to 18 meters per second are forecasted on the coast, while on Sunday, gusts of southern and southwestern wind may reach up to 15 meters per second.
According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LEGMC), the warmest November 18 was in 2020, when the average daily air temperature across the country was +9 degrees, and the maximum reached +12.2 degrees in Bauska. The coldest holiday was in 1998, when the average daily air temperature in Latvia dropped to -10.6 degrees. The absolute temperature minimum was recorded in 1965 in Mērsrags — at that time, the thermometer dropped to -18.1 degrees.
The thickest snow cover on the Day of the Proclamation of the Latvian Republic in recent decades was recorded in 1992 in Rēzekne — 27 centimeters.
