"At least in the short term, the 'Progressives' will only strengthen," predicts political scientist Janis Ikstens based on the results of recent protests.
In an interview with Diena, he talks about "culture wars." "It is clear that this is something that has been debated for a long time in Western Europe and North America, and it has only recently appeared here." According to the expert, the "social-liberal side" represented by the aforementioned party intends to engage in a "clash over fundamental values." For its part, "New Unity" is no longer the "true defender and driver" of this issue.
"We do not know what the composition of the future Saeima will be," admits J. Ikstens. "We are not that extraordinarily united, and often these differences are related to two factors — education and age. And, most likely, we as a society are following a path that many others have taken... Looking at what is happening in the U.S., it is clear that it has reached such extreme manifestations, and I would be truly unhappy if we started to approach something like that, not to mention if we found ourselves in such a situation. Therefore, I perceive this story about the young man who threatened to shoot Shlesers in this context — that there is radicalization occurring in society. The fact that he is mentally unstable, well, I apologize, in the U.S., such mentally unstable individuals occasionally do something. Precisely because of this incitement, which is currently obviously happening, that we are now some kind of Kremlin power and this is almost the most important battle — well, this is obviously exaggerated."
J. Ikstens noted that both sides are inciting passions. "But the louder side at this moment, in my opinion, is that of those supporting the convention." "The need for de-escalation is completely obvious," the expert recommends.
