For the first time, the German cruise liner AIDA Prima will visit the Freeport of Riga for two days, on November 17 and 18. The ship from AIDA Cruises belongs to the Hyperion class (cruise ships 300 meters long) and will bring approximately 3,300 passengers and 900 crew members to the capital, reports the public relations department of the Freeport of Riga.
The liner was built in the docks of the Japanese corporation Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and became the first ship of the Hyperion class in the AIDA Cruises fleet (there are only two in total). It is specifically designed for the German cruise market with a special focus on comfort for families and energy efficiency. Its 18 decks feature a dozen restaurants, 18 bars and clubs, six pools, a spa area, and a sunbathing deck covering 4,484 square meters. The beach area by the pool is covered with a transparent membrane that allows ultraviolet rays to pass through. At night, images of constellations are projected onto this dome, and laser shows are organized.
Traditionally, on November 18, a ceremonial coat of arms exchange will take place on board in honor of the crew's first visit to the Port of Riga. In connection with this significant date, the captain and crew will also receive a special gift—a anniversary cake in the colors of the Latvian flag in honor of Independence Day.
The 2025 cruise season at the Port of Riga is going very successfully. Riga has already welcomed 82 cruise ships, 9 of which have included Riga in their itineraries for the first time. By the end of the year, during the Christmas season, 4 more cruise ship calls are expected, including another visit from the AIDA Prima. According to the current forecast, 86 cruise ships will visit Riga this season, allowing for approximately 115,000 passengers to be served—40% more than last year. This will set a new annual record for the Port of Riga.
