In the first week of the fallen leaf collection campaign, Riga residents handed over 967 tons of leaves, the LETA agency was informed by the External Communications Department of the Riga City Council.
This year, the leaf collection points started operating on November 1. There are 34 points open in Riga.
The collection of leaves follows the experience of previous years - mainly on Saturdays and Sundays, and in some points also on weekdays.
Considering the experience of the first week, the municipality once again urges compliance with the leaf disposal rules: do not leave empty bags at the points, only submit leaves during the operating hours of the points, and ensure that no other waste, especially slugs hidden in the leaves, is mixed in with the leaves.
On November 15 at 12:00, at the leaf collection point in Mežaparks, representatives of the Department of Open Spaces and Mobility, along with the staff of the points, will explain how the organization of work is proceeding during the fallen leaf collection campaign.
By the way, the Latvian Nature Fund encourages leaving half of the leaves on the ground, as natural processes ensure their gradual decomposition and the return of nutrients contained in them to the soil. This process is crucial for the entire ecosystem. Decomposing leaves provide habitat and food for many species of insects, as well as, for example, frogs and hedgehogs, which find food (snails, insects, worms) there and make winter nests.
