Today in Latvia, solar winter begins - the time of year when the Northern Hemisphere receives the least amount of sunlight.
According to data from timeanddate.com, solar winter will last until February 4. During these three months, the duration of daylight in Riga will be less than 9 hours. The shortest day will be on December 21: the sun will rise at 9:00 AM and set at 3:43 PM, thus the duration of the day will be only 6 hours and 43 and a half minutes.
On February 5, 45 days after the winter solstice, solar spring will begin, lasting until May 6. During this period, the day will increase from less than 9 hours to almost 16 hours.
Astronomical autumn this year began on September 22 and will last until December 21, when the winter solstice occurs. Astronomical winter will last until the spring equinox on March 20.
Meteorological winter begins when the average daily temperature remains below zero for five consecutive days. Last year it began on December 4, while in 2022 and 2023 it started on November 17.
