In 2023, frontline medic Sarmīte Cīrule was awarded the title 'European Person of the Year in Latvia' for her selfless work in Ukraine. But only now has she received the diploma and a symbolic gift – a tablecloth in the colors of the Ukrainian flag in the Saeima.
Working on the front lines in Ukraine is sometimes incredibly difficult, but the gratitude of the people helps to keep going,” said frontline medic Sarmīte Cīrule today in the Saeima, who was awarded the diploma 'European Person of the Year in Latvia – 2023'.
As reported by the president of the 'European Movement of Latvia' society, Andris Gobinš, the medic received a knitted tablecloth in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, made by teacher Sandra Kivliņece. Cīrule, like previous laureates, is invited to set the table with this tablecloth on the day of Ukraine's victory.
Cīrule received the title 'European Person of the Year in Latvia' as a result of public voting in 2023; however, she was unable to attend the ceremony in person and participated remotely.
In the voting, the public expressed support for the medic for her selfless work on the front lines in Ukraine, for helping the wounded, and for her willingness to risk her own life. Voters called her 'the bravest woman in Latvia with a clear mind and a warm heart,' emphasizing her courage and human strength.
The title 'European Person of the Year in Latvia' is awarded to individuals who make a significant contribution to strengthening common European values in Latvia and glorifying the name of the country in Europe.
