Chlorine Will Flow from Taps in Riga This Week

From today until October 30, preventive disinfection (chlorination) of the water supply is scheduled in Riga, the communications department of "Rīgas ūdens" informed the LETA agency.

Chlorination will begin simultaneously at all water pumping stations. It is planned that the disinfectant will be evenly distributed throughout the city's water supply system.

Although the disinfection of the water supply poses no health threat, it is recommended to consume boiled water during the process and for 24 hours after its completion.

For household purposes, water can be safely used without boiling. Water intended for pets, birds, and ornamental fish should be allowed to stand before use, as should water for watering houseplants.

During disinfection, tap water may acquire an unpleasant odor and may have a slight taste of chlorine; however, the amount of the substance used for disinfection is not harmful and poses no health risks. Specialists from "Rīgas ūdens" will continuously monitor the situation, carefully observing the concentration of chlorine in the water.

Preventive disinfection of the water supply network is recommended twice a year, but no less than once every two years.

The audited revenue of "Rīgas ūdens" last year amounted to 76.336 million euros, which is 0.1% less than in 2023. Due to the revaluation of assets, the company incurred losses of 18.275 million euros, in contrast to profits in 2023, according to the information released by the company.

"Rīgas ūdens" provides water supply services in Riga and in several suburban areas — in the Adazi, Ropaži, Mārupe, and Ķekava regions, as well as services for the collection and treatment of wastewater. The sole owner of the company is the Riga City Council.
