"Seeing the statistics, you will look at Riga residents with different eyes. It turns out that Riga is growing faster than Moscow!" - this is how the 1968 video published on social media from the Latvian National Archive begins. This clip is shared by the residents of Latvia.
The active and rapid population growth is reported in a video. The capital of Latvia is developing, and the population is increasing. There are many young people in the city.
"It turns out that Riga is growing faster than Moscow: the population of Riga is already 700,000. One in six people in the city is a pensioner, but the most common age of residents is 25-34 years. Every day, 24 babies are born in the city.
"Riga residents spend twice as much on alcohol and tobacco as they do on rent. But don’t think that every Riga resident is an alcoholic! The rent is only 2.5 percent of their earnings," says the voiceover in Russian with a slight Latvian accent in a 1968 video.
According to statistics, in 2025, just over 600,000 people lived in Riga. And one in four residents of Latvia is a pensioner, even considering the increased retirement age.
In 2023, an average of about 15 children were born each day in Riga.
