Starting in 2026, not only waste disposal and heating in Riga may become more expensive, but also public transport fares. This was reported by the mayor of the capital, Viesturs Kleinbergs (“Progressives”), during the broadcast of the program “Open Conversation” on Latvijas Radio 4.
“It is clear that ticket prices will increase sooner or later. And, of course, it is more reasonable for this to happen gradually - every year or every two years, rather than suddenly one day they will rise by 30–40%,” noted Kleinbergs.
When asked if the ticket price could rise to 2 euros, the mayor replied that he “does not want to speculate on numbers.” He emphasized that the current fare remains below the cost price for the company Rīgas Satiksme.
“Riga also pays for transport for the residents of Jaunmarupe. And if Pieriga starts participating in the payment, we will develop our transport,” added the mayor.
In addition to tariffs, city authorities plan large-scale infrastructure projects. Preparations are underway for the launch of river trams on the Daugava, and a major renovation of the Cable Bridge is also being prepared. The cost of the work is estimated at around 70 million euros.
