No Spanish Slugs! New Leaf Collection Rules in Riga

From November 1 to 30, the Riga City Council will provide residents with the opportunity to submit collected leaves from trees and shrubs for free at 34 points across various districts of the city. However, this year a new requirement has been introduced — the submitted leaves must not contain Spanish slugs, reports LETA, citing the Riga City Council.

The collection points will mainly operate on Saturdays and Sundays, and in some places — on weekdays as well.

The list of leaf collection locations has been supplemented with four new points based on residents' suggestions: on the section of the parallel street along Vienibas Gatve between houses 120 and 116, at the house on Ogres Street 8, at the turnaround ring at the end of Laivinieku Street, and at the intersection of Balta Baznicas Street and Vecaku Boulevard.

Some previously operating points have been closed for various reasons, but new ones have opened nearby.

The municipality reminds that it is prohibited to bring and leave leaves outside the operating hours of the collection points, as well as to submit them in bags — leaves must be emptied into the designated containers or specialized garbage trucks. Leaves should not contain impurities from other waste, and after submission, bags must be taken back. Household appliances, furniture, construction waste, or leaves mixed with household waste cannot be brought to the points.

Due to the active spread of Spanish slugs in Riga, an additional requirement has been introduced: leaves with the presence of these pests will not be accepted. If their presence is detected during submission, the acceptance will be declined.

The work at the collection points will be coordinated by the Maintenance Department of the Department of Environmental and Mobility of the Riga City Council. Staff will monitor order, organize the leaf collection process, control the operation of special equipment, and assist residents whenever possible, especially elderly people.

There will also be increased patrolling by the Riga Municipal Police at the locations to prevent unauthorized waste disposal.

In 2024, 3,301 tons of leaves were collected in this manner, while in 2023, 2,769 tons were collected.

The list of collection points and their operating hours are available on the municipality's website: www.riga.lv.
