Currently, at least 126 Latvian citizens are serving sentences in the United Kingdom, of which about 30 may be transferred to serve their sentences in Latvia, the Ministry of Justice reported.
Today, Justice Minister Inese Lībiņa-Egnere met with the new British Ambassador to Latvia, Katie Leach, to discuss cooperation between the two countries in the fields of justice and security. The parties considered the possibility of concluding an agreement on the transfer of convicted persons from the United Kingdom to Latvia.
The parties agreed to continue expert consultations to clarify mutual understanding and seek the best solutions.
During the negotiations, the issue of extraditing Latvian citizens suspected of committing crimes for judicial proceedings in the United Kingdom was also raised.
The Justice Minister noted that after the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union, it is necessary to find solutions similar to those that exist with other EU member states outside the EU, where a significant number of Latvian citizens reside.
