Clinical psychologist Georgy Alekseev believes that the main secret of long-livers is not constant cheerfulness, but discipline. It is this trait that helps a person maintain a sleep schedule, take care of their health, eat properly, engage in physical activity, and consult doctors in a timely manner.
There is an opinion that long-livers are people who know how to enjoy life. In reality, it is not so straightforward: the chances of living a long life are much greater for those who possess a certain character trait.
— The main character trait that distinguishes long-livers is discipline, — says clinical psychologist Georgy Alekseev to "Doctor Peter." — It affects a lot: how a person follows a diet, how regularly they exercise, how they take care of themselves, how they adhere to doctor's prescriptions, how regularly they take medications and undergo examinations.
Discipline supports healthy sleep. When a person goes to bed on time, at the same time, sleeps well, and maintains a sleep-wake cycle, it significantly increases the body's reserves and helps cope better with stress.
As for cheerfulness, it relates more to emotions than to character. Yes, one person may have a more positive attitude towards certain events, but all of this is very situational. Cheerfulness is formed from many factors, even the most insignificant ones. For example, if someone is rude to you on public transport — then your cheerfulness diminishes. Only one person will quickly recover from rudeness, while another will dwell on it, get irritated, because they lack reserves and do not have the strength to cope with stress. And these reserves are primarily provided by good sleep and physical health.
We cannot help but react to stress. A person is created in such a way that they will emotionally react in any case. But when we are healthy, not suffering from fatigue and lack of sleep, our reaction will not be so pronounced, and the consequences of stress will not be so serious. If a person does not get enough sleep, feels tired, or has some pain, it is difficult to remain cheerful.
Unfortunately, we cannot influence many events. The stress from the death of a loved one or some other grief can even worsen the condition of a healthy person. And here, discipline is also important. It is necessary to support the body and, if needed, consult psychotherapists, who are now available in every district clinic. There are psychosomatic diseases that gradually destroy the body, and a person's mindset and reserves depend on a lot.
Do Not Lose Contact with People
Psychotherapy is aimed at changing attitudes towards situations, changing certain behavioral stereotypes and patterns that only worsen in old age.
It is difficult for an elderly person to adapt on their own. With age, the so-called "rigidity of mental processes" gradually increases, which manifests itself in conservatism, making it difficult to perceive anything new.
In their memory and self-perception, a person feels young. Behind every grandfather and grandmother hides a twenty-year-old guy and girl. But a person sees a reflection in the mirror that does not match this feeling and wants to return what was. This leads to a lot of dissatisfaction, irritation, sadness, and even envy. And from such negativity, people tire more quickly.
Experts remind us: the secret to longevity consists of daily habits. Full sleep, moderate physical activity, care for health, emotional resilience, and the ability to maintain a balance between work and rest help the body to preserve energy longer, resist stress, and maintain a high quality of life.
