Cardiologists Warn About Harmful Supplements for People with High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure, or hypertension, occurs when blood exerts excessive pressure on the walls of blood vessels for an extended period. As a result, the heart has to work harder, which over time can lead to arterial damage and increase the risk of serious complications — heart attack and stroke.

The basis of hypertension treatment consists of lifestyle changes and medication therapy. However, many people additionally take dietary supplements, hoping for their 'natural' benefits. Doctors warn: not all such products are safe for the cardiovascular system.

Cardiologists have named several popular supplements that are better to avoid with high blood pressure.

Bitter Orange

Bitter orange extract is often included in weight loss and endurance-enhancing products. It contains synephrine — a substance that can raise blood pressure and provoke heart rhythm disturbances. For people with hypertension, this can pose a serious danger.

Licorice Root

Licorice is widely used in folk medicine — for issues ranging from digestive problems to sore throats. However, such supplements are undesirable in cases of hypertension. They contain glycyrrhizic acid, which promotes sodium retention and can increase blood pressure.

Additionally, licorice lowers potassium levels in the body, increasing the risk of muscle weakness and heart rhythm disturbances. Studies show that even small doses with regular consumption can significantly affect blood pressure readings.

Caffeine Supplements

Caffeine is not only found in coffee and tea. It is often added to energy and concentration-enhancing products. However, this stimulant can cause a temporary increase in blood pressure, making such supplements undesirable for people with hypertension.

Yohimbine

Yohimbine is derived from the bark of the yohimbe tree. It is added to weight loss products, sports performance enhancers, and even sexual health supplements. This substance acts as a stimulant and can raise blood pressure and heart rate.

Ephedra

Ephedra is a herbal remedy traditionally used for colds and coughs. Today, it is often used in weight loss and energy-boosting supplements. However, the alkaloids contained in it, such as ephedrine, are associated with serious risks: increased blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, and even sudden death.

Moreover, ephedra can interact with blood pressure medications and reduce their effectiveness.

Experts emphasize: before taking any supplements for hypertension, it is essential to consult a doctor. Even natural components can have a strong impact on the body and pose health risks.
