The More They Ban — The More Popular It Becomes: The Story of the Most Unusual 'Flash Mob' in the World

On the South Island of New Zealand, there is an unusual attraction — the so-called 'bra fence'. This story has become a vivid example of how attempts to ban spontaneous traditions only increase interest in them and make them even more popular.

It all started in 1999 when several women's bras unexpectedly appeared on the fence of a farm in the small town of Cardrona. No one knew exactly who hung them there and why. The local press only briefly mentioned this oddity — and that became the starting point.

Within a month, the number of 'exhibits' grew to several dozen. Attempts were made to remove them, but this only fueled interest. People began to come specifically to contribute to the strange tradition. Six months later, hundreds of items of women's underwear adorned the fence.

Attempts to clean the fence were made more than once. Activists, concerned about the 'moral aspect', removed the bras, but each time this only attracted a new wave of attention. The unusual fence began to be written about across the country and then beyond its borders.

Over time, those who could not come in person also got involved: bras started to be sent by mail. By 2006, their number exceeded several hundred, and the authorities intervened. The fence was classified as a state road, and the 'exhibition' was dismantled, explaining it as a concern for driver safety and public morality.

However, the effect was the opposite. Just a month later, a new 'bra fence' appeared nearby, quickly surpassing the previous one in scale.

Today, this place has become a kind of tourist attraction and a symbol of grassroots initiative. Many leave not just underwear here, but small messages, turning the fence into an unusual form of communication.

For a casual traveler, this sight can be a complete surprise. That’s exactly what happened to us: a long line of hanging bras suddenly appeared outside the window. First — confusion, then — interest and a desire to understand what lies behind this strange phenomenon.

Later we learned the history of this place, but at that moment we were just walking along the road, examining the 'exhibits' and trying to grasp the meaning of this unusual tradition.

We had a girl with us on the trip, and on the way back, we jokingly expected her to also decide to support the local custom. But she could not choose which of her bras to part with — and the tradition remained for her just an observation from the sidelines.

Thus, a random idea turned into an international phenomenon — and proved that sometimes the strangest initiatives turn out to be the most enduring.
