Gum diseases worsen the condition in chronic kidney disease.
A study conducted by researchers at the University of Cincinnati has shown that gum diseases can worsen the condition of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The work is published in the journal BMC Nephrology.
Both diseases share common inflammatory mechanisms, such as immune disorders and microbiological imbalances, which exacerbate the condition of both teeth and kidneys. Patients with CKD and gum diseases have higher risks of developing other chronic conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension. This complicates their treatment and increases the likelihood of hospitalizations.
The researchers emphasized that dental care plays a crucial role in the treatment of CKD, especially for patients on dialysis or awaiting kidney transplantation. Regular dental check-ups can prevent complications and expedite patient preparation for transplantation, improving their chances of successful treatment.
The researchers urge doctors to integrate dental care into the treatment of patients with CKD to minimize risks and improve overall health.
