Doctor Reveals the Impact of Coffee on Bone Density

Therapist: coffee alone rarely becomes a cause of osteoporosis.

Therapist Alexander Kozlov explained whether coffee consumption can lead to osteoporosis.

The doctor stated that caffeine can indeed affect bone tissue density, but this relationship is much more complex than commonly believed. Kozlov clarified that caffeine has a mild diuretic effect and may slightly reduce calcium absorption in the intestines and accelerate its excretion by the kidneys. However, the scale of these losses is often overestimated.

According to the specialist, only about two to six milligrams of calcium are lost due to one cup of coffee, whereas a glass of milk contains around 300 milligrams of this substance. Thus, the impact of caffeine on calcium balance is minimal in most cases, the doctor specified.

Kozlov emphasized that coffee alone rarely becomes a cause of osteoporosis. "The risks increase when several factors are combined. For example, with a calcium deficiency in the diet of a coffee drinker. The second point is abuse: this refers to regularly consuming more than four to five cups of strong coffee a day. The third risk group includes women in the postmenopausal period, when hormonal changes make bone tissue more vulnerable," the specialist explained.
