The tax will depend on the type of accommodation. For example, guests in tourist apartments will pay about €12.50 per night. In hotels, the amount will range from €10 to €15, directly related to the category of the establishment.
The fee will be included in the booking price. The accommodation operator will then transfer the amount to the city services. According to regional media reports, rates may increase in the coming year.
Why Barcelona is Introducing a New Fee The city aims to reduce the flow of short tourist trips that create pressure on the streets and transport. The authorities want to encourage longer visits so that tourism revenues are distributed more evenly. The tax will serve as an additional tool for regulating high tourist activity.
As a result, the collected funds will go towards projects in social and housing policy. Barcelona, which has a population of about 1.7 million, has long faced rising rental prices and pressure from mass tourism. Part of the revenue will be directed towards improving tourist infrastructure so that the city can cope with the growing number of visitors.

For example, in Venice, a mandatory fee of about €10 for day-trippers will be in effect starting in 2024. It is paid in advance online.
