Oncologist Mezhetsky: obesity increases the risk of breast cancer in women.

Mammologist and oncologist Eduard Mezhetsky explained the connection between obesity and breast cancer in women.

"Obesity not only disrupts the functioning of most organs and systems in the body but also increases the risk of developing breast cancer by 20-40 percent, especially in postmenopausal women," the doctor warned.

He explained that a special enzyme called aromatase is produced in adipose tissue, which is responsible for the synthesis of the sex hormone estrogen. This means that the more fat in the body, the higher the level of this estrogen. At the same time, the imbalance in estrogen levels accelerates the division of breast cells, increasing the likelihood of mutations and tumor growth.

Additionally, with obesity, the sensitivity to the hormone leptin, which regulates appetite, decreases, causing the body to produce it in much larger quantities than necessary. At high concentrations, leptin stimulates cell division, including cancer cells, and makes them resistant to chemotherapy while enhancing their ability to migrate (metastasize).

Moreover, as the oncologist noted, with excess weight, fat cells increase in size and often die, prompting the immune system to respond to this process. This leads to chronic inflammation in the body, which also raises the risk of malignant tumors.
