He began his film career in the early 1970s, debuting in the film The Cowboys. He later appeared in several notable projects, including "Coming Home," Martin Scorsese's "Mean Streets," and "The Big Red One."

The actor gained the most popularity for his lead role in the 1984 comedy "Revenge of the Nerds." He later appeared in the films "Escape from L.A." and "Django Unchained," and in the 2000s, he was remembered by audiences for his role as the father of the main character in the series "Lizzie McGuire." The actor's last works date back to the late 2010s.
