Viewers can expect a tense love story.
The drama 'Wuthering Heights' directed by Emerald Fennell – an adaptation of the famous novel, featuring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, has received mixed reviews but certainly did not leave critics indifferent. What should you know before watching?
'Wuthering Heights' (1847) is the only novel in the legacy of Emily Brontë. This dark love story has become a classic of English literature. The book tells the story of the lives of two Yorkshire families – the Earnshaws and the wealthy Lintons, who live next door. In the Earnshaw family, a boy named Heathcliff, who was taken off the streets, grows up. A strong bond develops between him and Earnshaw's daughter, Cathy, from childhood. However, social status forces adult Cathy to marry the wealthy Linton. Heathcliff seeks revenge.
The story unfolds a passionate love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, whom her father took in. When her father dies, Catherine's biological brother, envious that Heathcliff was their father's favorite, treats Heathcliff like a servant and beats him. The plot tells of Heathcliff and Catherine's wild love, as well as Heathcliff's fury, pain, jealousy, and revenge that he ruthlessly unleashes on the man who stands in the way of marrying her – Edgar Linton.
Emerald Fennell announced the start of work on the project on her social media on July 13, 2024. The film is produced by MRC and Margot Robbie's LuckyChap Entertainment. This is the third collaboration between Fennell and Robbie after 'Promising Young Woman' (2020) and 'Saltburn' (2023). In September 2024, Robbie and Jacob Elordi were cast in the lead roles, marking Elordi and Fennell's second collaboration after 'Saltburn'. In November 2024, Hong Chau, Alison Oliver, and Shazad Latif joined the cast.
Netflix's chairman Dan Lin offered $150 million for the distribution rights to the film. Fennell and Robbie hesitated to agree, as they wanted to ensure the film received a theatrical release and marketing campaign. Matthew Belloni of Puck noted that Robbie still has to star in an original Netflix film or become its producer and that Fennell will have to decide where to release the film. In October, Warner Bros. Pictures, which struck a deal with LuckyChap, won the bidding for the film rights, although its $80 million offer was lower than Netflix's, after guaranteeing a wide theatrical release and significant marketing commitments. Filming began in the UK in January 2025.
The film's score was composed by Anthony Willis, who previously worked with Fennell on 'Saltburn', while Charli XCX contributed by releasing an album of original songs. The lead single, 'House' featuring Welsh musician John Cale, was released on November 10, 2025, along with a music video directed by Mitch Ryan. The second song, 'Chains of Love', was released on November 13, coinciding with the theatrical trailer's release, which also featured this song. The third single, 'Wall of Sound', was released on January 16.
